Owerri is the capital city of Imo state, Nigeria. It is regarded the heart of igboland, thus, the eastern heartland. Owerri is surrounded by Otamiri River to the east and Nworie River to the south. Christianity is the dominant religion in Owerri.

It is currently referred to as the entertainment capital of Nigeria because of its high density of spacious hotels, high street casinos, production studios and high quality centres of relaxation. It is the home to an annual beauty pageant called "Miss Heartland". Owerri has a major Nigerian football club: Heartland F.C. It was known previously as Inwanyawu Nationale, but the team retained its nickname: The Na'azi Millionaires.
